ACP Composites Inc. :: Vacuum Bagging Systems & Pumps

How to Select a Vacuum Pump

Vacuum pumps are designed to “pull” vacuum, which produces a negative pressure or a below atmospheric condition inside the vacuum bag. Vacuum is measured in inches of mercury (Hg) and the higher the number the better the vacuum. The difference between the negative pressure inside the bag and atmospheric pressure (14.7 psi @ sea level ) outside the bag is what generates the pressure on the laminate. For example, at sea level, if 24” Hg of vacuum is pulled from a vacuum bag that is encapsulating a tool or a formed part, approximately 11.5 pounds per square inch (psi) is applied on the part enclosed in the vacuum bag.

Care should be taken not to crush the part inside the bag. For instance, 1.0 Lb density white foam should not be subject to vacuum over 7” - 8” Hg. When vacuum bagging solid laminates into a female mold or tool, 18” - 24” Hg is recommended.

A pump should be chosen that pulls at least the minimum vacuum level required. Vacuum pumps are also rated in cubic feet per minute (cfm), which is the amount of air the pump will pull at zero vacuum. The size of the bag or the surface area of the part encapsulated by a vacuum bag film and how long it takes to reach the desired Hg of vacuum will determine the cmf (flow) the pump will need.
