Aramid fibers were first developed by the E.I. DuPont Company in the early 1970’s and trademarked under the commercial name Kevlar ® . This fiber is an organic fiber in the aromatic polyamide (aramid) family. It has high strength, stiffness, toughness and thermal stability. Aramid fibers are 43% lighter than fiberglass, with a density of 1.44 g/cc compared to 2.55g/cc for fiberglass. Aramid fibers are twice as strong as E-Glass and ten times as strong as aluminum. These unique properties make it an exceptional fiber for use in composite reinforcements, ballistics applications, ropes, cables and protective apparel where high strength, thermal stability and puncture resistance are required.
